The Rivers' Poverty

A Fallen Family Old Mr. Rivers' Death The Rivers' father died suddenly of a stroke, leaving them with little money. St. John is a poor clergyman, and Diana and Mary work as governesses. They live in the old family home, Marsh End, which is humble but cherished. The Lost Inheritance Their uncle, John Eyre, had quarreled with their father and left his fortune to Jane, not to them. They receive only thirty guineas for mourning rings. They accept this with dignity. Jane's Discovery When St. John discovers Jane's true identity, he tells her about the inheritance.
